Empowering the community and society

 Bank Hapoalim's activities have wide-scale economic effects and added value, including its contribution to the country’s economy by tax payment, local procurement and employment of workers.


As part of its Social Sustainability and Responsibility program, the bank also examines its social responsibility from the following aspects:

  • A combination of social and environmental considerations in choosing suppliers;
  • Providing equal opportunity to and a diversity of suppliers;
  • Protecting the rights of contractor employees working in the bank.

 

During 2012, the bank developed responsible supply chain management and wrote a formal policy of sustainability and CSR implementation in procurement processes. The policy is based on principles such as: dialogue and the creation of shared value, partnership and mutuality, the ambition to form long-term relationships, fairness and transparency. The policy establishes procurement groups of goods and services to which it applies, presents criteria related to sustainability and CSR to be applied to each group's activity, and creates a link to the procurement center's work processes. During 2013, the process of formulating mandatory requirements and criteria for preference of suppliers was completed. The goal of this process was to include these requirements and criteria in contracts with suppliers and in bid evaluation processes.
During 2016, the bank instilled such requirements and criteria in several ways, as detailed extensively in the bank's responsible procurement policy.

Responsible Procurement policy

 

Within the vision, strategy and values of the Bank Hapoalim Group, the bank perceives itself as being committed to active involvement and leadership in society and the community alongside its business leadership and economic initiative. This involvement has materialized through the “Poalim in the Community” program, which is part of an advanced management perception. The bank has also established a national volunteer organizing system called “Poalim from the Heart”, which involves hundreds of the bank’s employees in different areas of the country. 

 

Implementation of the sustainability and CSR program, in view of the its founding principles as described in the report, helped the bank reach significant achievements at all levels of activity. Following are a few examples of the bank's achievements in 2016:

  • Approximately 92% of the bank’s purchasing is from suppliers who are located in Israel and 
  •  In 2016, the bank invested in dozens of non-profit foundations and community organizations in the area of education, working with over 183,000 people (2/3 of them are students – children and adolescents) in hundreds of institutions and dozens of towns throughout Israel. The bank provided aid through more than 500 scholarships to academic institutions for students across the country. 
  • At least 64,000 people participated in cultural and artistic activities supported by the bank in 2016. 
  • At least 255,000 people received care and assistance in the areas of health and welfare through organizations supported by the bank throughout Israel in 2016. 
  • Promotion of volunteer activities at the bank through integrative management by the nationwide volunteering network that involves hundreds of the bank’s employees across the country in an estimated total of 152,000 hours* for employee volunteering to the community.
  • The financial value of Bank Hapoalim’s social involvement over the last 13 years is NIS 543 million, out of which NIS 44 million in 2016.
  • The monetary value of the donations of computer systems by the bank in 2007-2016 is approximately NIS 7.5 million, out of which NIS 801 thousand in 2016.

* Volunteer hours include employees' children's activities. Summer Youth – 30,000-45,000 hours of activity annually.
